Studying food labels while grocery shopping has become an increasingly popular practice, especially as more consumers want to understand the nutrition and ingredients contents in their food.

But for many Americans, reviewing labels isn’t just helpful—it’s necessary. Nearly 32 million have at least one type of food allergy, reports the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including one out of every 13 children. Says the agency: “For many, even a tiny amount of an allergen can trigger a serious, even life-threatening response by the body’s immune system.”

Last week, the popular supermarket chain Kroger first let its customers know about a bread recall due to an undeclared allergen hazard. Then, late this Thursday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded the recall, which now affects the mega retailer Walmart.

The notice reports that Indiana state-based Hartford Bakery, Inc. has voluntarily recalled six lots—about 883 loaves—of Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf.

The issue, says the FDA, is that there were visible hazelnuts in the bread, which the packaging did not properly advise consumers about. Explains the agency: “While the packaging states ‘May Contain Tree Nuts,’ it does not state that it ‘Contains Hazelnuts.’ An investigation revealed an error in change of packaging for a hazelnut-containing bread to the implicated white bread product.”

Tree nuts—such as hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, or pistachios—are a common type of food allergy, but being specific on product labels is important because having an allergy “to one tree nut does not necessarily mean an individual is allergic to other tree nuts,” says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

To date, it’s said no serious injuries or illnesses have been reported. However, the FDA’s notice mentions that Hartford Bakery knows of “one customer who experienced digestive discomfort after consumption.” The bakery also received complaints from customers who noticed hazelnuts in the bread.

The loaves were distributed to retailers—“including Kroger and Walmart”—in 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The FDA provided the following product details:

  • Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf
  • Net Weight: 12 ounces (340G)
  • Packaging: Flexible plastic bag
  • UPC: 24126018152, found on the bottom of packaging

Hartford Bakery, Inc. is said to have determined “no other lot codes were affected,” per the notice.

The FDA says customers “who purchased the implicated products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.”
