The frequent TODAY contributor's openness about her journey led to a recent honor. Here's what she's looking forward to now.

NBC’s Jill Martin on Cancer and Courage: “I Didn’t Sugarcoat the Fear”

Throughout Jill Martin’s career—during which she’s worked as a longtime TODAY Show contributor, New York Knicks reporter, and lifestyle brand founder—she’s brought audiences the latest in trends and news. Then in July 2023, the Emmy award winner shared a more personal story, revealing she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering she is a carrier of the BRCA gene. This was just a few months after vigilantly going for her annual mammogram. Martin has since undergone a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, reconstructive surgery, radiation, and more.
As many cancer patients also know, life doesn’t stop for treatment and sometimes tests personal strength in the toughest of ways. Martin has also spoken publicly about enduring a divorce that same year.
But last month, Martin was honored with the Spirit of Life Award from the City of Hope East End Chapter/Jeanne Kay League of New York. City of Hope is “one of the largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations in the U.S.,” with this award having previously gone to such figures as Dr. Jill Biden, Katie Couric, Jane Fonda, and Robin Roberts. Kathie Lee Gifford presented the award to Martin at this year’s ceremony.
Recently, Jill Martin caught up with The Healthy by Reader’s Digest to reflect on receiving the honor and sharing her cancer journey authentically. As she implored TODAY viewers in 2023: “Just please see your doctors and see if genetic testing is appropriate.”
The Healthy by Reader’s Digest: Jill, congratulations on being recognized with City of Hope’s Spirit of Life award! It’s been about two years since your diagnosis, and your story of being diagnosed is proof of how vigilant we all should aim to be. How are you doing in this moment?
Jill Martin: Honestly, I’m doing really well. Two years ago, I was just trying to get through each doctor’s appointment without falling apart. Today, I feel strong, hopeful, and full of purpose. I’m healing—not just physically, but emotionally too—and I don’t take a single moment for granted.
The Healthy: Where have you found the greatest support through this journey?
Jill Martin: My “color war team.” The people who showed up in the quiet moments—at 3 a.m. when I was scared, or sitting with me in waiting rooms. And from strangers who became instant sisters through shared stories. There’s something powerful about women lifting each other up in their most vulnerable moments.
The Healthy: Why do you feel like you were chosen for this particular award?
Jill Martin: Because I said “yes” to sharing the hard parts. I didn’t sugarcoat the fear, the surgeries, or the toll it takes. I think this award honors honesty—and the idea that by being real, you can help someone else feel less alone. Through the TODAY Show and my platform, I’ve been able to turn this chapter into action—sparking conversations around early detection, genetic testing, and the importance of knowing your risk.
The Healthy: What’s something you’re looking forward to right now?
Jill Martin: I’m working on something really meaningful for October that’s close to my heart—and I can’t wait to share more soon. And personally, I’m just looking forward to quiet mornings, meaningful connections, and sherpa season, of course.
The Healthy: Finally, what is one self-care habit you refuse to skip?
Jill Martin: Letting myself rest—without guilt. And choosing joy, even when things feel uncertain. Whether it’s a walk with a friend, a quiet moment to breathe, or a great outfit that makes me feel like me again—that’s all part of healing.
